I Started With 4 Alpacas

Hi, I'm Christi Armbrust, owner of the Nome Schoolhouse. I began my interest in fiber in 2008 with 4 alpacas and a spinning wheel. It didn't take long for me to grow frustrated with the delay between sending the sheared fleeces to a processor and getting my roving and yarn back.

After a lot of prayer, i opened my own fiber processing mill in late 2010. Learning the equipment, learning the fibers - it was a challenge. And I loved it! I worked my full time job and the mill together for about a year. Then it was all in on wool!

By 2018, my mill needed expansion... badly. A good customer and I paired up to find a place to expand both our businesses, and we found the Nome Schoolhouse.

Three years of renovation later, the Schoolhouse opened in 2021. Even during that renovation, we continued to process fiber for my partner's needle felting kits.

In 2024, my partner decided to separate from the operation, and I became the owner. I have continued to diversify other aspects of the Schoolhouse, but the fiber mill remains the same: turning out high quality fiber, roving, felt and yarn for artists around the country. I offer a one-on-one visit inside the mill through our 3-day Barn to Yarn Experience, where you are hands on in the entire process, from animals to finished yarn.  And our boutique hotel is open for guests year round. Come to learn, to play, to relax. Visit our growing fiber flock in our newly renovated barn. It's an experience like nothing else. And it's in Nome, North Dakota!
